Welcome to the legendary Río Futaleufú, one of the most iconic whitewater rivers on Earth.
Flowing through the wild landscapes of Chilean Patagonia, the Futaleufú is famous for its turquoise glacial water, massive rapids, and breathtaking scenery. This 8-day kayaking expedition is designed for experienced paddlers seeking an unforgettable combination of big water, technical rapids, wilderness, and authentic Patagonia culture.
Based out of a Patagonia-style Lodge in the heart of the valley, the trip combines classic sections of the Futaleufú with nearby rivers and creek runs depending on water levels and group ability. Throughout the week, paddlers will progressively explore some of the region’s most iconic whitewater, including rapids such as Entrada, Terminator, Mas o Menos, Throne Room, and Casa de Piedra.
With expert guides, safety kayakers, personalized coaching, and a small-group atmosphere, this expedition delivers a high-end paddling experience in one of the most spectacular river valleys in the world.

Itinerary at a glance
Your Patagonia adventure begins with a breathtaking regional flight from Puerto Montt to the remote coastal village of Chaitén, offering incredible aerial views of fjords, volcanoes, glaciers, and the wild landscapes of Northern Patagonia.
Upon arrival in Chaitén, our team will meet the group and begin the scenic drive toward Futaleufú. Along the way, we pass turquoise lakes, hanging glaciers, temperate rainforests, and dramatic mountain peaks as we travel deeper into the heart of Patagonia.
After arriving at the lodge and settling into your accommodations, guests will meet the guides for a welcome orientation, trip briefing, and kayak outfitting session. Depending on arrival times and group energy, there may also be the opportunity for a short warm-up paddle on a nearby section of the river.
In the evening, enjoy the first of many incredible Patagonia meals together while getting to know the group and preparing for the week ahead.
The week begins with group skills assesments on various sections of the river.
This day includes an intro into bigwater paddling, skills needed, and progressions for the entire week.
Group communication and safety will be the priority for this day.
Our second day will be spent on the famous “Bridge to Bridge” section of the Futaleufú.
This classic stretch offers fun wave trains, technical moves, and continuous Class III–IV whitewater—perfect for adjusting to the power and style of the river while building group confidence and flow.
Guides will provide coaching throughout the day, focusing on river reading, positioning, and big-water technique.
Today explores more remote and dynamic sections of the river system. It includes legendary rapids such as Terminator, Mas o Menos, Throne Room, and Khyber Pass.
Depending on water levels and the group’s progression, the day may include continuous big-water paddling and technical channels which offers a different style of whitewater.
The flexibility of the itinerary allows guides to choose the best objectives and conditions available.
One of the most iconic kayaking days in Patagonia. A full day of paddling the entire river system, starting in town and finishing almost at the mouth of Lago Yelcho.
Expect massive wave trains, skirting powerful hydraulics, technical lines, and unforgettable scenery as the river cuts through steep granite walls.
Full safety support and scouting are provided where necessary.
We go back to the bridge to bridge section of the river to spend the day lapping the most famouse section in Futaleufu.
This day is dependant on group energy level and choices.
A flexible final river day based on group energy and interests.
Choose to lap your favorite section of the week, explore another nearby run, or enjoy a slower-paced day relaxing at the lodge, hiking, swimming, or simply soaking in the Patagonia atmosphere.
In the evening, celebrate the expedition with a traditional Patagonian asado and final dinner together.
Transfer to the airport or continuation of your Patagonia adventure.
Additional kayaking, hiking, rafting, or multisport extensions throughout Chilean Patagonia can be arranged.
Travel Logistics & Arrival Information
Due to the remote location of Futaleufú in Northern Patagonia, reaching the valley requires a combination of domestic flights and ground transportation. While this journey takes additional coordination, it is part of what makes the region so wild, untouched, and special.
Guests should plan to fly from Santiago (SCL) to Puerto Montt (PMC) one day prior to the start of the expedition and spend the night in Puerto Montt. The following morning, travelers will take a regional flight from La Paloma Airport (Puerto Montt) to Chaitén.
Our team will meet guests upon arrival in Chaitén and provide group transportation to Futaleufú, a scenic drive through some of Patagonia’s most spectacular landscapes.
We are happy to assist guests in coordinating all logistics related to flights, recommended hotels, and connections to ensure a smooth arrival process. Please note that flights, hotels in Puerto Montt, and additional travel expenses before the expedition are not included in the trip price.
